The Solution
Every Dog Deserves the Freedom to Run
For many dogs, a busy off-lead park is a place of joy. For others, it's simply too much.
Across Wellington, there are dogs who cannot safely enjoy our shared off-lead spaces. They may be anxious, fearful or reactive around unfamiliar dogs or people.
Some have experienced neglect, poor socialisation or trauma before finding the loving homes they have today. Others have developed anxiety after a frightening experience or because of illness, age or temperament.
These dogs are not "bad dogs."
They are dogs who need understanding, patience and the right environment to grow.
Their owners know this better than anyone. Every day they carefully plan walks, avoid crowded areas, cross roads to create distance, and constantly watch for potential triggers.
Many feel isolated because they cannot enjoy the same experiences that other dog owners take for granted. Yet these dogs are deeply loved.
They deserve the chance to run, play, explore and simply be dogs.

A Different Kind of Dog Park
Freedom Fields is built around one simple idea: Every dog deserves access to a safe place where they can exercise without fear.
Our members-only, bookable dog exercise spaces will provide a calm, secure environment where anxious and reactive dogs can enjoy genuine freedom.
We are looking to locate our first Freedom Field in the Central Wellington area. This includes the larger South Coast and Eastern Suburb districts.
Instead of unpredictable encounters, owners know exactly who will be there. Instead of crowded parks, there is space. Instead of anxiety, there is the opportunity to build confidence.
Dogs can enjoy the enclosure with just their own family, or owners can choose to invite up to two other compatible dogs, allowing a maximum of three dogs in the park at any one time.
This creates opportunities for carefully managed play and gradual socialisation in a low-stress environment that benefits both dogs and neighbouring communities.

Healing Happens One Positive Experience At A Time
Confidence is rarely built overnight. For many anxious or reactive dogs, progress comes through hundreds of small, positive experiences:
These moments matter.
With time, patience and consistency, some dogs may develop the confidence and skills to enjoy Wellington's public off-lead parks. Others may always prefer quieter environments—and that's perfectly okay too.
Success looks different for every dog.
Freedom Fields exists to give every dog the opportunity to thrive, whatever their journey may be.
- Running freely without fear.
- Learning that another dog can share their space safely.
- Responding calmly to training.
- Relaxing enough to sniff, explore and play.

A Place To Learn Together
Freedom Fields is not only a place for exercise. It is also a place for learning.
The secure, private environment makes it an ideal setting for owners working on recall, confidence building, loose-lead skills and behavioural training without the distractions and unpredictability of a busy public off-lead dog park.
We also see Freedom Fields becoming a valuable space for qualified dog trainers to work alongside owners and their dogs. Having access to a dedicated, enclosed area allows training sessions to be safer, more focused and more effective, particularly for dogs that are unable to participate comfortably in public spaces.
Helping dogs succeed often means giving their humans the right environment to learn as well.

A Better Outcome for Everyone
Providing dedicated spaces for anxious and reactive dogs benefits far more than the dogs themselves:
Most importantly, more dogs have the opportunity to become happy, confident companions living full and enriching lives.
- Owners gain a safe place where they can relax instead of constantly managing risk.
- Other park users experience fewer difficult encounters in public off-lead areas.
- Neighbouring communities benefit from thoughtfully managed spaces designed to minimise conflict and unnecessary noise.
- Professional trainers have access to secure facilities where they can support dogs and owners more effectively.

Building A Kinder Wellington for Dogs
We believe there is room in Wellington for a different kind of dog space:
- One that complements existing public parks rather than replacing them.
- One that recognises that not every dog has the same needs.
- One that supports responsible ownership instead of simply responding when problems arise.
By creating even a single Freedom Fields site, we can begin building a network of safe, private exercise spaces that help dogs, support owners and strengthen our wider community.
Whether you're a dog owner searching for a safe place to exercise your companion, a landowner with space that could make a difference, or an organisation looking to support innovative solutions for animal welfare and responsible dog ownership, we'd love to hear from you.
Together, we can give more Wellington dogs the freedom they deserve.
